LAS VEGAS -- In the nation's capital, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is on the brink of pushing through a national health program that Democrats rank alongside the creation of Social Security and Medicare. In Nevada, that very achievement is imperiling his re-election prospects.
At a recent speech at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in front of a largely friendly audience, Mr. Reid faced a series of hecklers. When he said only in the U.S. do people go bankrupt because of health costs, a man wearing a red "Dump Harry" shirt said loudly: "It's an outright lie."
Reid is a true traitor - Pure Scum
Mr. Reid, 70 years old, is faring worse than most of his colleagues. Besides taking flak from some over health care, he hails from a relatively conservative state with a tough economy. Its unemployment rate, 12.3%, ties for third highest in the nation. Nevada ranks second in mortgages that are in foreclosure.
Adding to Mr. Reid's troubles is the disclosure that in 2008 he suggested voters were ready to support a "light-skinned" African-American with "no Negro dialect" for president. He apologized to President Barack Obama, who called the matter closed.
A recent poll showed 52% of Nevadans with an unfavorable opinion of Mr. Reid. He is trailing three potential Republican opponents, according to the poll commissioned by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, garnering just 40% against each. On Tuesday, political analyst Stuart Rothenberg moved Mr. Reid's Nevada Senate seat from the "toss-up" category to "lean takeover" in favor of the Republicans. Mr. Reid's campaign manager, Brandon Hall, said: "Our own internal polling shows Sen. Reid beating all of his potential opponents."
A defeat of Mr. Reid would be a symbolic and substantive blow for the Democrats, comparable to the 2004 loss by Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota, his predecessor as Senate Democratic leader. Mr. Daschle, too, confronted tension between a liberal party and a conservative state. Mr. Reid's Republican opponents, besides saying the health bill gives Nevada a raw deal, emphasize Mr. Reid's connection to Washington and say he has become too liberal.
Reid has done enough damage to our country, the true American loving democrats, and humanity as a whole. It's time for this piece of scum to finally go away...
